Starting next school year all High Point Academy students will have a new dismissal time. Starting in the 2020-2021 school year, students will dismiss at 2:45 p.m. The school day will continue to start at 8:00 a.m. The school board approved the changes during the February meeting.
School leaders believe shortening the school day by 35 minutes will increase student focus and achievement. “We have looked at this issue very closely over the past several months, trying to determine what is best for our students and staff,” said High Point Academy Superintendent Dr. Brodie Bricker. “We think making this change will put even more value on our core academic classes, while also allowing more time for extra-curricular activities.” Students will be able to begin after school activities earlier, allowing students to get home sooner, Dr. Bricker added. Dismissing at 2:45 p.m. will also allow more time for Professional Development for teachers and staff.
Students will continue to receive the same amount of instructional time in their academic classes as before. In the Elementary School, students will continue to attend two Academic Arts classes each day for 30-minutes apiece. In the Middle and High School, students will no longer attend an advisement class. A ten minute homeroom period will be added to the start of the school day.
The new schedule complies with state guidelines for instructional minutes set by the South Carolina Department of Education. These changes also allow all three schools to maintain the same schedule for our families.
Any parent or guardian who may have questions about the new dismissal time is encouraged to reach out to their school principal (Elementary: firstname.lastname@example.org, Middle: email@example.com, High: firstname.lastname@example.org).
