High Point Academy Spartanburg’s Middle School Teacher Spotlight for January is Mrs. Heidi Boyd. As a Special Education teacher, Mrs. Boyd works with students from 5th to 8th-grade. She started her career at HPA during our very first year, first as a tutor in the after school program, and then being hired to teach second grade. In her twelfth year in Education, Mrs. Boyd is now an irreplaceable member of the Special Education department at HPA and works diligently to help her students achieve success.
When you walk into her classroom, you are likely to see several students working on different tasks. Mrs. Boyd is often seen working with students individually to provide tailored support and encouragement. When asked what makes her classroom unique, Mrs. Boyd replied, “What makes my classroom unique is that I get to work with my students over multiple years. I get to see first hand the growth they make, no matter how big or small each year.” Mrs. Boyd takes pride in teaching her students to never give up on their education, despite how long it may take to achieve success. She also teaches them to never compare themselves to others.
After having a difficult start to her own elementary school career, Mrs. Boyd’s family relocated to S.C. from New Hampshire. It was there that a teacher took the time to work with her and discovered an underlying reason for her struggles. “After meeting with my parents and testing, the staff determined that I am dyslexic and struggled in reading, writing, and math. This teacher (Mrs. Brewer) changed my life. She showed me that I can be successful in school.”
Mrs. Boyd is married with two children. Her oldest son, Michael, is in the Army. Her daughter, Kayla, graduated from HPA last year and is pursuing a career as an artist. When she isn’t at school, she enjoys spending time with her family, going hiking, and visiting amusement parks. Mrs. Boyd is an avid roller coaster enthusiast.
