It’s about creating a different mindset through math for February’s High Point Academy Spartanburg High School Teacher Spotlight. This is Mr. Bennett Lewis’ first year at HPA but his seventh year overall in education. He teaches ninth through twelfth graders PreCalculus, Algebra II, and Geometry.
Mr. Lewis hopes to help students find confidence in who they are through mathematics. “Many of them walk in saying, ‘I’m just not good at math,’ but I want them to discover that they can overcome that idea,” stated Mr. Lewis. “They have what it takes to change that mindset with some effort and perseverance, and I hope they can see how that idea applies to them in a broader sense as a person.” Mistakes are not just accepted in Mr. Lewis’ class but are welcomed. “I want students to try new things and find what works and doesn’t work. It’s my hope that they will not be defeated by mistakes but learn from them and learn to welcome the challenge.
What he enjoys most about teaching, are the relationships he builds with his students. “I enjoy getting to know them and hearing from a student that I make their least favorite subject fun or that I played a part in making them more confident in math.”
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Lewis spends time with his wife and three-year-old daughter, Victoria. They enjoy walking, with their dog, on nature trails near their house.
