For High Point Academy Spartanburg’s High School Teacher Spotlight, it’s about creating lifelong learners. Mrs. Kiley Painter teaches 9th through 12th-grade Spanish. This is her fifth year at HPA and her 13th year teaching overall. Mrs. Painter says that many times it’s the students that teach her about different cultures, abilities, and perspectives.
When students step into her classroom, she wants them to feel comfortable. Inside the classroom, students sit at small tables and in comfortable chairs that are inviting and conducive to a conversation in small groups, so students can feel more at ease practicing the language. She hopes each student will feel valued and safe in their learning environment. ”Ultimately, I want my students to confidently tell their friends and coworkers long after graduation that they loved Spanish in high school and be able to still speak the language,” says Mrs. Painter. “I want to expose them to new ideas and cultures.” She hopes her teaching styles will ignite a passion for learning in her students, just like the one she still has. “My students keep me informed of the current trends, and I try to adjust my teaching style and lessons to stay relevant to their everyday lives.”
Outside of HPA, Mrs. Painter enjoys spending time with her husband, Gary, and their two children Garrison (8th grader here at HPA) and Karsyn (7th grader here at HPA). Mrs. Painter says she loves working where her children attend school so that she can be a part of their educational experience.
