High Point Academy Spartanburg’s middle and high school dance students enter “The Zone” every day when they come to class. Ms. Keasha Currence teaches middle and high school dance and is our November High School Spotlight teacher. This is Ms. Currence’s first year at HPA, and her fifth year teaching overall. She is also the Head Cheerleading Coach for the Grizzlies.
In Ms. Currence’s class, she not only expects students to master the dance standards but also to become more confident in themselves, using dance to express their thoughts and emotions. “My classroom is called “The Zone” because it is a judge free, positive, and high energy environment,” says Ms. Currence. “Changing the lights, genre of music, and styles of dance allows them [students] to explore different movements and textures of dance.” Teaching dance allows her to find new ways to build confidence and self-awareness in students. “I teach because it brings me pure joy to see my students conquer their fears and doubts, which allows them to gain a deeper love for dance.”
Off-campus, Ms. Currence can be found creating custom home decor pieces for her small business, “Lemon Meringue.” She also loves to shop, attend sporting events, travel to new places, and spend time with her dog Preston and loved ones.
