From the second grade, teaching was the only career Mrs. Amanda Garrett wanted to pursue. Now she’s in her 17th year as an educator. This is her second year at High Point Academy Spartanburg, where she teaches sixth-grade math.
In her classroom learning comes in many forms. “We approach learning in different ways every day,” says Mrs. Garrett. “We play games, we get up and move around, and we use real-life situations that relate to us. Learning is relevant and happens as a class, with partners, in small groups, and independently. Sometimes our learning is loud and sometimes it’s quiet with soothing music. Our learning environment is always evolving!” She helps her students become problem solvers, deep thinkers, and instills in them the desire to push themselves to think like and become mathematicians. Mrs. Garrett says, “I love when a student gains the confidence they need to be a successful student in math class. When a student accomplishes something and develops a sense of pride in themselves, that’s the moment I love as a teacher.”
When she isn’t at school Mrs. Garrett loves ice cream and taking beach trips with her husband and four children.
