Mr. Thornton’s love of history drew him to teaching. He is High Point Academy Spartanburg’s April Middle School Teacher Spotlight. Mr. Thornton began as a substitute on Long Island, New York and moved south in 2005. While he is a proud Long Islander, Mr. Thornton came to South Carolina to be closer to his father’s family and to broaden his teaching career. He spent seven years at Carver Middle School before coming to High Point Academy in 2014 as part of the original faculty.
Since coming to HPA, Mr. Thornton has set a high standard for the Social Studies department and worked hard to develop both a strong team and an excellent curriculum. One of his favorite parts of his job is arranging extended field trips for his students. He has taken students to New York, Washington D.C., and Charleston so that they could see where history was made and have a firmer grasp of both their history and the cultures of others.
A lifelong student, Mr, Thornton graduated with History Honors from Dowling College, and this year began a Master’s Degree in Administration so that he could better develop the faculty that he works with. Another favorite part of teaching is mentoring new teachers and helping them learn their craft and set high standards for their students. We are so thankful for the experience and leadership Mr. Thornton brings to our middle school team.
