Second Semester Message From Superintendent Junkins

Dear HPA Family,

High Point Academy | Spartanburg, SCI hope your New Year is off to a wonderful start. It’s hard to believe we are two weeks into January. We have many great things happening at High Point Academy Spartanburg with the main priority on academic focus.

Middle of the year benchmarks with i-Ready are complete, and those scores have been sent home to elementary and middle school parents/guardians. Our teachers and support staff are using that information along with other assessments to help us identify any needs so we can address those with students. It is equally important to know student’s strengths so we can challenge them at their highest potential. Our goal is for all students to succeed academically, socially, and personally. All students are working hard, and we see significant gains.

For the first time, our middle school students have the opportunity to join book clubs that meet once a week. Research shows there are significant benefits to reading on a regular basis. Some of the benefits include mental stimulation, stress reduction, knowledge, vocabulary expansion, memory improvement, stronger analytical thinking skills, improved focus and concentration, and better writing skills. Simply reading 20-minutes a day increases a person’s vocabulary. Reading is a valuable part of a student’s educational success. Be sure and check out our ‘Polar Plunge Challenge’ for students!

Our high school seniors are beginning the home stretch toward graduation. In just a few short months these young adults will be wrapping up their final classes culminating with End of Course Exams and earning their diplomas. We encourage each senior to stay focused on the goals ahead and enjoy this time with peers and family.

As in previous years, High Point Academy is a Title I school. Title I is a federally funded educational program designed to help underprivileged children meet challenging state academic standards. Our team of teachers, parents, community members, support staff, and students have developed a plan on how to spend the Title I money our school has received. If approved, the Title I team will soon purchase items that will provide extra support for students’ academic needs.

Open Enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year is here. Families who are not currently enrolled at HPA but wish to attend are submitting New Student Applications for next school year. All applications must be received by March 13 to be eligible for the lottery. Please share this information with family and friends who may be interested in attending High Point Academy.

We invite everyone to come out and support our students and our school over the next semester. Right now, winter sports are in full swing with girls and boys basketball and wrestling. Baseball, softball, and soccer teams have begun workouts and will kick off their seasons in the spring.

Be sure and join us for our student Talent Show on February 26 for some great acts. Details about S.T.E.A.M. Night, set for March 14, will be announced soon and look for information about upcoming Family Information Nights happening throughout the semester. And be sure and join us for our musical later in the semester as our students and Fine Arts Department present ‘Happy Days.’

Finally, as we continuously strive to be the best we can for students, staff, parents, and stakeholders, we are forming a School Success Committee. This committee will meet bi-monthly to discuss things the school is doing well and things we could improve. If you are willing to be a part of this committee, or if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email or call me at 864.316.9788.

We are excited about the semester ahead, and we hope to see you around campus or at activities and events. Go Grizzlies!
