This month’s Middle School Spotlight is Ms. Sarah Hetzel. This is her first year at High Point Academy, and she’s already making an impact with our sixth-graders. Ms. Hetzel has been working with children her entire life, but it wasn’t until her junior year in high school when she decided she wanted to pursue education. At that time, she was working in a fourth-grade class and was given the opportunity to teach a lesson to the students. It dawned on her immediately that in front of a classroom is where she needed to be. Although she is also certified to teach elementary school, she is thrilled with the opportunity to work with our middle school students. While finishing up college, Ms. Hetzel had the chance to student-teach at her old high school in Greenville, SC. She was also the assistant coach of the track team under her former coach, where she gained a passion for coaching as well. After student teaching, Ms. Hetzel taught and coached at that school for two years, then decided to come and try something new and landed with us, at High Point Academy!
Ms. Hetzel says, “I really like teaching the smaller classes at High Point. I enjoy how quickly I was able to get to know my students, and I find it much easier to work with my fellow teachers as a team.” She tries to teach students to believe in themselves and become more independent. Her favorite thing about teaching is that “ah-ha” moment that students get. “I love when students come running to me to show me how great they did on an English test or any other accomplishment that they achieved. It’s such a pleasure to get to watch people grow from kids into young adults. That is why I enjoy teaching middle and high school!”
